What are partial dentures?

If you are missing one or more teeth in the upper or lower arch then partial dentures may be right for you. These dentures can be constructed when you have natural teeth of your own that can be used as support to hold your dentures in place. Partial dentures are made from an alloy of Cobalt and Chrome or plastic with metal wire.

What type of partial dentures are available?

There are two types of partial dentures available: metal partial dentures and acrylic partial dentures. Metal partial dentures are manufactured from Cobalt Chrome or Titanium, whereas acrylic partial dentures and made from hard acrylic or a flexible acrylic material. The flexible partial dentures are more suited to those missing a small amount of teeth. They are also preferred from an aesthetic perspective, when retainers and clasps are visible.

Removable partial dentures usually have replacement teeth that are fixed to a plastic base, which matches the colour of your gums. The plastic base may also cover a metal framework. Partial dentures often have some form of clasp that attaches to your natural teeth to secure the denture in place.

How do I maintain a partial denture?

A partial denture will often need more attention than a full denture to maintain the health of your remaining teeth. Partial dentures can trap food, which will cause decay in your natural teeth if not cleaned properly. Both the denture and your teeth should be brushed after every meal. Furthermore, a badly fitting partial denture can severely damage your gums that are supporting your natural teeth, which can lead to bone loss, denture mobility, and ultimately the loss of natural teeth. If you notice soreness, swelling or bleeding of your gums you should consult with your Denturist as soon as possible. When inserting or removing your partial dentures never try to force it. Instead, place it in a position with you hands and never bite it into position as you may damage your denture, your teeth and/or your gums.

What are the benefits of partial dentures?

Partial dentures have several benefits. First, they make it easier for you to chew food. Second, they can also help you speak better if your speech has changed due to missing teeth. Third, removable partial dentures can support cheeks and lips so the face does not sag and make you look older.
