You lost your teeth, and you’re having difficulty with your dentures. While it may be tempting to eat without your dentures, (and a lot of people do) it can be dangerous to your mouth and the rest of your body.

There are a lot of reasons why you might be eating without your dentures. Maybe they’re causing you pain? Maybe they’re falling out of your mouth while you’re eating. Whatever the reason is, we’ve listed a few health issues that can occur as a result of eating without your dentures.

Please read below. We hope this will change your mind next time you think of eating without your dentures.

  1. Gum & Jaw Issues: when you chew without your teeth, your gums as well as your jaw have to work A LOT harder. Why? To ensure that food can be swallowed. Over time, your gums will become irritated and sore. All that extra work can result in serious problems like TMJ & gum infections. Additionally, the jawbone can weaken over time and potentially fracture.

  2. Gastrointestinal Problems: when you don’t chew food properly, incomplete digestion occurs. Nutrients from the food don’t get extracted properly. Additionally, there can be bacterial growth. Undigested food becomes fodder for bacteria in the colon.

Eating without your dentures can cause serious short and long term consequences. Do you or someone you know have issues with dentures? If so, please give us a call, we’re here to help!
